Introduction

Ulisse Matthey (Torino 1876-Loreto 1947) belongs to a generation of organist-composers who left an original footprint of european importance in the history of italian organ music: the renewal of organ music that took place between the nineteenth and twentieth century saw in him, in Marco Enrico Bossi, Raffaele Manari, Pietro Alessandro Yon, the virtuosos able to interact with the symphonic novelties of an instrument at finally updated to the european technical potential. Aware of the need to reorganize the figure of the organist, no more limited to the church function but open to the great concert, Matthey was author of ambitious music of symphonic conception and romantic expression; celebrated as interpreter and composer, international concert player, famous teacher in Turin conservatory, was between the two Wars the most influencing and complete organist in Italy. The importance of the corpus is remarkable for the history of modern organ music, a true lack of a period that could be reconsidered.
